Sixteen students and four staff
members “bused” their way through
Germany, Poland and the Czech
Republic, looking at important sites
relating to the rise of Nazism in
Germany. This helped the students to
understand why these events were able
to occur and how the policies of the
Third Reich impacted on almost every
person living in Europe during that
time. The students met and spoke to
many individuals willing to talk about
the tragedies that occurred, which
certainly had a huge impact on our
students and staff. This history
side of the tour also helped the art
students to understand why there was a
big shift in the types of paintings
being done around this time. Artists
were no longer content to
paint “pretty landscapes and
portraits”, their paintings’ subject
matter changed to include political
and social messages.
This trip was a wonderful, fun and
rewarding experience for all and the
bonds and friendships built on the
camp will last well beyond the high
school years and the students would
like to thank both the North West
Shelf Venture and Karratha Senior High
School P&C for their generous support.
